It’s that time of year for the good old spring clean. It’s also the time of year that our scarf collection goes into hibernation, probably for not as long as we’d like, given the British weather. If you’re looking for something cool and interesting to do with your scarfs, then you’ve come to the right place. You may have too many and feel that you need to donate some, but if that thought is just too heartbreaking to bare, then why not repurpose a select few. That way, you get to keep all your favourite scarfs and actually be able to use them all year round.
Kimono
For those budding seamstresses out there, a kimono is super easy to make out of an old scarf with just three seams. Start by cutting your scarf in half, then cutting one half in half again. Sew both short ends of the quarters to the larger half, and you’re good to go!
Hairband
Just wrap your scarf around itself and tie around your head. Simple, classy and effective.
Cushion cover
For super-easy DIY cushion covers, place your cushion in the centre of your scarf and fold the two shorter sides around the cushion. Then take the two longer sides, tie across the front of your cushion and tuck the ends in.
Gift wrap
This works just like the cushion cover, to be honest. This is a great idea for giving something a little extra as a gift.
Handbag tie
To brighten up any handbag, just take your scarf and tie in a bow around one bag strap. This works particularly on tote bags.
Sarong
Of course, you can just tie your scarf around your waist for a skirt sarong, but for something a little different, place the scarf behind you and, holding onto the top two corners, cross the corners across your chest, wrap around your neck and tie in place.
Patchwork quilt
Patchwork quilts work particularly well for slightly damaged scarfs. They may be fraying slightly, or have stains and marks on them. Just cut into squares or other geometric shapes of your choice and sew away!
Handbag
Make an easy hobo bag with any old scarf. Just make sure that, if you’re using a scarf made of a thin, lightweight fabric, you line it to make the bag strong enough to use.
Camera strap
Fed up of your ugly old camera strap? Make a new one with an old scarf. You can even combine it with your existing camera strap to make it a little easier, otherwise you’ll just need to fix the scarf to some leather pads to attach to your camera.
Belt
Super simple, really. Just fold your scarf length ways to make the belt as thick or thin as you’d like, then wrap it around you and tie! This will add a little spark to any tired old outfit.
